Solomon Islands businesses face steep challenges. A scattered geography drives up transport costs, markets are small and fragmented, and many enterprises struggle to access finance, services and reliable buyers. These constraints make it difficult for businesses to grow, create jobs and reach higher value markets especially outside the capital, Honiara.
Strongim Bisnis, the flagship programme of the Solomon Islands–Australia Partnership, is tackling these barriers head on. Delivered by ASI since 2017 and funded by the Australian Government, the programme works with businesses, communities and government to strengthen how markets function, so growth can be sustained and shared more widely.
BUILDING MARKETS THAT WORK FOR EVERYONE

Rather than offering one-off support, Strongim Bisnis focuses on fixing the systems that hold businesses back. It co-invests with partners to test practical solutions, improve market connections and scale what proves commercially viable.
This has meant working with businesses across sectors such as cocoa, coconut, tourism, sustainable timber and seaweed to improve how products move from remote communities to buyers. By strengthening aggregation, logistics and market access, businesses are better able to reach customers and operate at scale.
The programme also backs entrepreneurs with growth potential. Through initiatives like the Iumi Gro Accelerator, small businesses have strengthened financial management, sharpened their marketing and developed products that respond to demand. This has helped firms move from survival to growth, creating more stable and better paid jobs.
At the same time, Strongim Bisnis is deepening Indigenous engagement in line with Australia’s regional priorities. In tourism, Indigenous to Indigenous partnerships such as the Shared Pathways exchange with Yura Tours have helped local operators turn cultural knowledge into market-ready experiences. These place-based tourism products strengthen local ownership while opening doors to higher value visitors.
“AUSTRALIA IS PROUD TO SUPPORT COMPANIES TO EXPAND EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES, CREATING MORE JOBS, HIGHER INCOMES AND STRONGER ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR SOLOMON ISLANDS.”
His Excellency Rod Hilton, Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands
STRONGER BUSINESSES, HIGHER INCOMES
These changes are translating into real gains for Solomon Islands households and workers.
Businesses supported by Strongim Bisnis are increasing sales, reaching new export markets and creating jobs. Improved market linkages mean producers in remote areas can now participate more reliably in commercial supply chains, lifting incomes and reducing vulnerability to shocks.
Tourism offers a clear example. With better designed visitor experiences and stronger market positioning, partner businesses have shifted towards higher value international markets. As a result, sales have grown rapidly and more income is flowing into local communities.
Employment has also expanded, with a strong focus on inclusion. Women now make up a significant share of new jobs created, and more young people are finding opportunities in growing sectors.
WHY IT MATTERS
Strongim Bisnis shows how targeted partnerships can unlock growth in challenging contexts. By addressing the root causes that limit business expansion, it is helping Solomon Islands enterprises compete, adapt and grow beyond Honiara.
The programme is designed to stay relevant as markets evolve. It focuses effort where there is clear demand and traction, and adapts when conditions change. This ensures resources are used effectively while expanding opportunities for women, young people and people with disabilities.
Its approach to Indigenous partnerships and climate investment also points to a more resilient future. By strengthening place based tourism and supporting climate aware production, Strongim Bisnis is helping businesses remain competitive as environmental and market pressures intensify.

“THIS MARKS THE BEGINNING OF A LAUNCH PLATFORM OR A SPRINGBOARD FOR MORE ‘MADE IN SOLOMON ISLANDS’ PRODUCTS TO ENTER MAJOR INTERNATIONAL MARKETS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.”
