Africa’s free trade area holds the promise of transforming the continent’s economies – but for many businesses, that promise remains distant. Despite the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) being the largest trade agreement in the world by membership, complex customs systems, overlapping regulations, and unclear certification processes still stand in the way of small exporters. For thousands of entrepreneurs, the goal of trading freely across borders feels out of reach.
To close this gap, ASI worked with local partners across Ghana, Nigeria, and Egypt through a programme commissioned by the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Together, they translated the AfCFTA’s complex trade rules into practical, country-specific tools that help businesses navigate procedures and start exporting with confidence.
Turning Policy Into Practical Guidance
Working alongside national trade ministries, customs authorities, and private sector representatives, ASI and its associates identified the main obstacles holding businesses back from trading under AfCFTA rules. The result was a set of clear, user-friendly materials – export booklets and infographics tailored for the food, drink, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors.
These tools break down every step of the export journey, from classifying products to completing certificates of origin. Through business engagement sessions reaching more than 200 participants, entrepreneurs learned how to use the tools, ask questions directly to trade officials, and connect with peers facing similar challenges.

Empowering Businesses to Trade Across Borders
The initiative is already making AfCFTA more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive – with 100% of surveyed participants saying they would attend similar sessions again. Participants described the materials as “insightful” and “packed with resources”, and several businesses have since begun preparing their first AfCFTA-compliant export documentation.
Beyond the immediate benefits for exporters, the project also helps strengthen regional integration. By clarifying how AfCFTA interacts with regional blocs such as ECOWAS and COMESA, it enables governments and private sectors to coordinate more effectively and simplify trade across the continent.
Why It Matters
Africa’s economic future depends on stronger intra-continental trade. Initiatives like this show how policy can be turned into practical action – empowering businesses to seize new opportunities, create jobs, and build more resilient economies. By helping exporters move from awareness to action, the programme offers a model that can be scaled to other AfCFTA member states.
